What Isolation Does To a Teenager

October 16, 2020
Isolation can affect teenagers at all ages, but especially right now in these circumstances. Due to the pandemic, everyone has been asked to stay at home or socially distance themselves from others. This has been challenging for teenagers because this is the time in their lives when they want to hang out with friends the most. Now, they have to isolate themselves and it can cause,”… lasting consequences in adulthood, changing the structure of the brain and altering normal development and decision-making behavior,” according to Psychology Today.
More research shows that isolation can cause teenagers to be depressed and have anxiety. Social isolation can worsen the feelings of low self-worth, loneliness, and other mental health concerns. Newport Academy says, “…research confirms how crippling this fear of rejection can be, leading to teenage isolation…As a result, more and more teens are choosing teenage isolation as a way to protect themselves from rejection and pain…Then they might suffer from social anxiety or lack of social skills.” It is perfectly healthy to socially interact with others because it allows one to grow as a person, meet new people, prevent them from mental health issues, and help them when they are an adult.
